If you want a smaller and beautiful bay with a chance of seeing sea animals up close, then it's Akumal. The two resorts are very comparable (and i say this as a frequent Secrets guest). Encouraged by Mike McHugh, our trusted travel agent of Dream Makers Vacation Services, we opted to go to Akumal rather than Secrets Maroma Beach on this visit to Mexico. Lengthy details of the Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya review are below, so i'll skip to the bottom line. Hopefully the Akumal will get it together and be like the Maroma soon as the 70 minute drive from airport is worth the beach. Snorkelling with turtles is free and easy, and beach is beautiful The resort is clean and restaurants fantastic but we didn't really go to see entertainment as its all very spaced out. We had no turn down service whilst there. The pool attendants weren't very attentive and the room mini bar was never restocked every day as promised upon arrival. They do not seem to have a sense of humour or enjoy the guests as the secrets Maroma beach did last year. Its a shame that there is no atmosphere at the Akumal, the staff do not seem to engage and those who do are very far and between. Also received access to the hydrotherapy area, which we used once in 6 nights. Theres a preferred lounge which is cold and soul less but we used as it was place to meet up. You get a breakfast area plated meals but the buffet is better. You get a nice room with a partial ocean view most rooms have baths on the balcony. However would not use a preferred guest again as its not value for money. The rooms are very clean and roomy, we went as preferred guests and were not disappointed with the suite. The hotel is beautiful and location faultless.
